New FDA Approved Drugs for Eczema

What is Eczema?

Eczema is a skin condition in which patches of skin become itchy, inflamed, dry, and cracked. The most common signs are raised bumps, thick cracking skin, and bleeding as a result from itching of the skin. Eczema may also appear as red or brown patches on the skin, although signs and symptoms vary from person to person. Eczema can arise in patients as young as 4 years old and persist into adulthood.

A Breakthrough for Eczema

Although there is no cure for eczema, there are several treatment options available, including three new FDA approved drugs on the market. These drugs are referred to as JAK inhibitors. Essentially, JAK inhibitors inhibit the activity of Janus Kinase enzymes which affect the signaling pathways of the immune system. Research shows dysregulation of the JAK pathway can contribute to eczema symptoms such as itching and inflammation. The FDA approved the oral drugs Cibinqo and Rinvoq, as well as the topical drug Opzelura. With these new drugs on the market, we have seen many long-term eczema patients receive skin clearance.
