Tretinoin: More Than Just An Acne Product

Written by: Kinsleigh Trice, PA-C

What is Tretinoin?

Tretinoin is a derivative of Vitamin A and is considered a retinoid. This product is FDA-approved topically for comedonal acne, commonly known as blackheads. Tretinoin strengths of 0.025%, 0.05%, and 0.1% are available by prescription.

How does it work?

Tretinoin increases collagen production and cell turnover. This helps keep collagen thick, while preventing clogged pores and discoloration.

What are the side effects?

The most common skin reactions typically include redness, dryness, and irritation. This will likely get better with time as the skin gets used to the product. Tretinoin can also make skin more photosensitive, so it’s important to wear your sunscreen!

How do I use it?

Patients should apply a pea-sized amount to their face at bedtime. When starting, I advise patients to use the cream twice a week, working up to nightly use as tolerated. If a patient has very sensitive skin, I recommend starting with over-the-counter Differin. Differin is a third-generation retinoid, which is not as potent as Tretinoin. Thus, Differin can be more tolerable for our sensitive skin patients.

Why should I use Tretinoin?

Tretinoin has significant cosmetic benefits. The product helps prevent fine lines, wrinkles, and skin discoloration, while increasing collagen and helping to unclog pores! In my opinion, it’s one of the best tools we have in Dermatology. If you’re interested in a prescription, make an appointment today!
